Homeowners describe the failure in almost identical terms. One, troubleshooting a unit that was chirping while showing nothing: "I look at it, and it has a solid green light." The light was working. The sensor was not.
To be fair about it: alarms built after August 2009 are required to signal end of life, usually a chirp every thirty seconds or an error code on the display. That works while the electronics still have power. The failure that catches people is quieter than that — a sensor that has stopped detecting on a unit that still lights up, because a dead sensor and a working one look identical from across the room.

But it does mean something specific about the device on your wall.
